This page offers basic guidance on typesetting a LaTeX document in the Kannada language using the Kannada script.

Support with ini locale file

Here is a minimal sample file with kannada as the main language (assuming luatex, which is the recommended engine, and babel ≥25.2, although it may work with previous versions).

\documentclass[kannada]{article}

\usepackage{babel}

\babelfont{rm}{Noto Serif Kannada}

\begin{document}

Local name $=$ ಕನ್ನಡ

Chapter $=$ \chaptername

Today $=$ \today

Digits $=$ \localenumeral{digits}{0123456789}

\end{document}

You may need download the font or replace it with another one in your system.

Calendar

The Indian National Calendar, named indian, is supported (luatex and xetex). Here is an example setting indian as the default calendar for \today.

\year=2026 \month=8 \day=15

\usepackage[kannada, provide={calendar=indian}]{babel}
\babelfont{rm}{Noto Serif Kannada}

\end{document}
