I also wrote a short reply but I'm not sure it ever made it to latex-l ... At least initially it got rejected (not sure why)

I'm not at all keen on deleting the arg spec syntax. My believe is that right now we do have a fairly good system and extending it should only be done if there is a very very good reason.

From my initial reading I don't think the suggestions fall into that category.

I do see a need for unique pointers but I don't think that a representation via the arg spec is the right approach
