Posted this to comp.text.tex, but no response there, so here 'tis in  
case anyone wants to discuss it.

I wrote up something on this a long while ago, but it seems to've been
lost.

Here's a quick recap as a starting point for discussion:

Foundry - Adobe, Bigelow &Holmes, &c.

Typeface - Latin Modern, Lucida
Family - Blackletter, Bright, Calligraphy, Casual, Engraved, Fax,
Informal, Sans
Shape/Style - roman, italic, oblique, upright italic
Features - Initial swash, finial swash, contextual ligatures &c.
Stylistic Alternate - 1--20
Weight - ultralight, light, book, regular, medium, semi/demibold, bold,
heavy, black, extra bold/black, ultra bold/black
Width - ultra compressed/condensed, extra compressed/condensed, thin,
condensed/compressed, narrow, normal/medium/regular,
expanded/extended/elongated, extra expanded, wide, ultra expanded
Case - Caps and lowercase, ALL CAPS, Small Caps
Numberstyle - tabular lining figures, proportional old-style figures,
proportional lining figures, tabular oldstyle figures, tabular
three-quarters height figures &c.

I think that covers most options / possibilities. Most of the weird
variations get folded into family (so one could have
Thames-Calligraphic Engraved). Not 100% sure if stylistic alternate
needs to be in there, but if it's not, one is at the mercy of what the
font designer has set up.
