Noone had problems with spaces, they can use any feature described in a book. The only problems I've seen are: 1. They use the wrong books (describing LaTeX 2.09) 2. They do not read error messages. Once someone who never heard about TeX before asked me how to write a letter under Linux and I said: "use LaTeX". It was about midnight and I couldn't give him any hints. When I came back the next day (I expected to be killed), he proudly presented his letter and I was a bit amazed to see the crown from the chess font properly centered above his name. Not bad for a "beginner". Nobody said that you are stupid.  And I'm sure = nobody thinks so.
