There's a really good line somewhere (Michael Doob's _Gentle_?) to the effect that such intricacies are unavoidable in a system where text commands are intermixed w/ text as text. Another consideration here is that there're similar projects already---StarTeX comes to mind: http://www.ctan.org/tex- archive/help/Catalogue/entries/startex.html?action=3D/tex- archive/macros/ And why wouldn't a beginner just use something like LyX anyway? www.lyx.org To be fair, w/ Omega and Unicode there is a potential for fixing this, by having a Unicode code page specifically devoted to TeX commands / symbols, but that'd require direct re-working of Omega and plain.tex to set up. Not w/ TeX / LaTeX as they are now written.

There's a really good line somewhere (Michael Doob's = _Gentle_?) to
the effect that such intricacies are unavoidable in a = system where
text commands are intermixed w/ text as text.

Another consideration here is that there're similar = projects
already---StarTeX comes to mind:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-
archive/help/Catalogue/entries/startex.html?action=3D/tex-
archive/macros/

And why wouldn't a beginner just use something like = LyX anyway?
www.lyx.org

To be fair, w/ Omega and Unicode there is a potential = for fixing
this, by having a Unicode code page specifically = devoted to TeX
commands / symbols, but that'd require direct = re-working of Omega and
plain.tex to set up.
