Yes you're right, I've found a redefinition of = '"' somewhere ...

I've tried to get some of my setup work with the new = output routine
(/w grid alignment) but it's too difficult for me to = define instances
so that everything is working as before. E.g. the = fancyhdr style file
doesn't work (it's ignored), or when using two = columns I don't know
how to get the headings span columns so that the = second column starts
below, etc.etc.pp.
