I now discovered that a subsequent message from Frank (Mittelbach) implicitly answered this: \usepackage{shortvrb} \MakeShortVerb{\|} [I knew there was a package SHORTVRB, but that did not appear to work - I now know you also need to use the declaration MakeShortVerb] So ignore this.
