I would like to see a cleaner division of work between BibTeX and TeX than the package currently has. The ideal would be to generate a *.bbl file of citation images, one per line, which have a 1-1 correspondence with the \cite commands in the document, in sequence (and, of course, with the \cite commands that would be generated by a \bibliography or similar command). But this requires progressive reading of an input file, one line at a time, on demand. Can TeX be made to do this efficiently?
