I always felt the method I used before (employing fonttext.cfg and > fontmath.cfg) was very clumsy. It is essentially the same conditions on fd files as all the previous releases. The case of the Sauter fonts is a difficult one, as while probably a good thing in principle, the current situation is that sites using them are a very small minority and so dvi files produced are rather non-portable. So it is probably a good idea to make this clear to users by using a higher profile change than just switching the fd files. (I do not have any definite suggestion, just musing at this point...) One solution would be to have a big push to get all/most sites to switch to sauter fonts but this is unlikely to happen (and on texs using type1 or true type fonts I am not sure they are even available?) In any case the effort would probably be better spent getting the TeX community to switch to the T1 encoding (How are the new dc fonts coming along? :-) David
