Lopes LabFis / Physics Lab - UFPB, Brazil e-mail: cendfi65@brufpb.bitnet ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Version 1.1 of AMS-LaTeX has a few points of incompatibility that prevent it from running unchanged with LaTeX2e. The AMS has produced some temporary patch versions of the primary files in the AMS-LaTeX distribution for ambitious users who would like to test them with the current preliminary release of LaTeX2e. These files are available on the AMS archive (e-math.ams.org) in the directory /ams/amslatex/temp-2e. Note that they only make a few adjustments to run without error in the `compatibility mode' of LaTeX2e. Development work is under way to produce version 1.2 of AMS-LaTeX which will be designed specifically for LaTeX2e. I.e., it will contain documentclass files that take advantage of various improvements provided by LaTeX2e. If all goes well AMS-LaTeX 1.2 will be released more or less simultaneously with the first full, official release of LaTeX2e, i.e. the release that makes LaTeX2.09 obsolete and makes `standard LaTeX' synonymous with LaTeX2e. The AMS strongly supports the LaTeX3 project and will continue the development of AMS-LaTeX in keeping with LaTeX development. LaTeX2e is an important step in this development because it makes AMS-LaTeX installation much easier: generating a separate LaTeX format file will no longer be required. The AMS encourages LaTeX users to upgrade their environment to LaTeX2e when the full, official release is made available.
