I have thought about the problem some time, but I dismissed all possible syntaxes coming to my mind (like employing a third type of braces). Note, that I'd like to omit either one optional argument or the other or both, depending on the circumstances. The place structure of commands like \documentclass[options]{class-name}[optional date] is a really ingenious invention and fits the purpose very well. Yours, J"org Knappen.
