Does what you've discussed > about it vanishing from LaTeX2e We didnt say it had vanished from 2e. we said that if you want to use the versions of LaTeX2e and amstex.sty *as currently found* on the archives, then you have to add a definition of \normalshape in your preamble. The version of 2e that will be available as soon as this current round of email ends, and we can get back to testing it, does define \normalshape in compatibility mode. From the sources: % \changes{0.12}{1994/01/24}{Added `normalshape and `mediumseries.} Look this stuff is testing. bb politely pointed out that the status of NFSS2 was slightly obscure, but the status of 2e is clear, it is in testing. It may happen that some commands get missed out, or compatibility mode is not as compatible as it could be. That's why we are asking you to test it. If you are hit by something like that, send a test file to the latex-bug address. It If we can fix compatibility so that your file works, your file will go into `the system' so that we can automatically check that it works with future releases as well. Sorry, but it's been a long day, and the discussion here has not helped. David.
