As the say in the US:  ``Just do it.''

The section and item environments *exist* right *now*, in classic,
pure LaTeX 2.09, and also in the new LaTeX2e. (Don't be satisfied
with light LaTeX, or even diet or crystal versions, use the real
stuff!)

At least, no problems are known to me.
