I don't think that there will be any change in the default and
for very good reasons.

btw the 2e classes have still some funny dimensions and will undergo
a few corrections in the next days.

but instead of complaining about the wrong defaults: I suggest to make
a contest for a good page layout on <some> paper. I certainly would
welcome additional classes in the latex2e world and they need not have
letterpaper or a4paper as the basis.
