Perhaps it is because I deleted NFSS2 and its related files before installing latex2e. It seems that latex2e needs some of those files to run. Perhaps anyone testing latex2e should do so *without* nfss2 in place, say by temporarily removing it from TeX' search path when running latex2e. This might be a better test! For instance, even \fontencoding{T1} fails with the distribution, for me at least! It tries to \input nft1.def, which doesn't exist.
