The %>settings used by the popular styles [article, book, report] for these %>parameters cause the figures to be placed in other locations infra, with %>no easy control over which page gets the figure. %> %>etc Grant provides ample evidence of the float mechanism failing, and I am prepared to believe him. My only experience has been with \begin{figure}[htbp], which served *me* well, but clearly fails for others. I was well aware of the failure of \begin{figure}[h]. One thing that *did* fail me however, was in typesetting tests with boxes to fill in, and with the marks awarded set in the margin as marginal notes. A few got set, but the vast majority disappeared completely. Pressure of time forced me to settle on a less satisfactory \hfill\rlap{} solution. I have never been back to discover exactly why these marginal notes disappeared. Is this a well known phenomenon?
