An italic correction at its begin is easy, of course.) It's not as easy as all that, since you don't want to correct if the following token is a full stop or comma (or possibly others...). I have a style to achieve this, which came via some network source from Dan Bernstein long ago. I've (largely) `productised' it, but it doesn't (I'm amused to note) do italic correction at the beginning if it's necessary. In today's world it doesn't look terribly good, but I've put it on ftp.tex.ac.uk:/incoming/ital.sty for anyone who'ld like a prod.
