This scheme offers optimum Hi, I agree with your motivations from the point of view of maintaining TeX, minimising confusion, classifying packages etc. But, forgetting history for a moment (!), consider things from the user's point of view---particularly that of a new user. There is a big enough proliferation of terminology without having to learn that the logical and likely-sounding style option 'times' should be referred to as 'nftimes'. Unfortunately, I can't say that I see any way around this. Perhaps the compatibility files that you mention could, by default say "Didn't you intend nftimes here?". Just a small point from the viewpoint of trying to make LaTeX less hostile to the novice. Gavin
