I had a couple of messages on the nf- business, but Listserv wouldn't let me
talk for a while, so I'm late to this debate.

My two cents:  let's chuck out the nf- prefix.

And: let's drop the "N" in "NFSS".  This has to go some time soon; why not
now.  Today.

Some alternatives:

OFSS     orthogonal font selection scheme
AFSS     advanced font selection scheme
LFSS     LaTex font selection scheme
FSS      font selection scheme
...
