In current LaTeX this -can be awkward: I must change \subsection -> \section, \subsubsection --> \subsection, \paragraph -> \subsubsection, ... I'd think it's a matter of the qualities of your text editor really. I'd like a \subsection to mean \subsection. Some sort of ability to shift things up would make the local context unclear, no? -and maybe also if I -was not foresightful enough, I have to change \label{ssec:xxx} to -\label{sec:xxx}, Like it really matters what the label is? Yes, it's nice to be consistent, but it's not like LaTeX could fix this anyway. -not to mention \ref's. Are you proposing LaTeX be able to do this? It can happen, but is it worth the effort. -I suppose here many of the -difficulties must be forestalled by the careful attention from the -writer mentioned by Eve and Joachim, but perhaps a few things can be -done by LaTeX to make it easier to promote or demote document I disagree that this is necessarily useful. Incidentally, Nelson's example can be done with some clever coding. This would be useful for all sorts of applications and in fact I have a 2.09 solution half-finished (it should be done in a couple of weeks). It can be done almost transparently for any article-class style and a few unintrusive additions to a document style fix many of the deficiencies. -dh Don Hosek dhosek@ymir.claremont.edu Quixote Digital Typography 909-621-1291
