While I (for one) would be more than happy for LaTeX3 to draw lines via PostScripts specials, there is no reason why a style file cannot be used to put these into place. The same happens with the EEPIC macros, which replace the line-drawing commands of EPIC with tpic specials. I seem to recall a similar style file which overwrites the line-drawing commands of PiCTeX with tpic specials. In fact, if producing the same output on all devices is deemed to be of overriding importance, perhaps the default could be made to be PiCTeX-like lines, with style files to use line fonts or PS lines supplied as standard parts of LaTeX3. At the same time, could we please have LaTeX specials that (a) insert grey-scale images onto the printed page; and (b) specify the colour of the text? (People may remember that I raised this about 3 months ago.) These are probably the two major features that stop LaTeX competing successfully with those dreadful DTP packages; and they are certainly causing me pain in typesetting my image processing textbook! .Adrian Dr Adrian F.
