Is there any realistic scenario where a paragraph ending could/should appear in the argument to \begin{letter}? Also, why does \letter insert a \leavevmode into its argument? It seems like this should be appearing in \opening if it's going to appear at all rather than way over at \letter. (This, by the way, is a change to letter.sty in the past few years and doesn't seem to be in latex.bug). -dh
