To my simple mind it should be possible to specify an = object to float to

You should be able to specify that an object will = float to the top of the
next column.

i.e \begin{object}[b]  ...... \end{object}
      \begin{object}[t] = ..... \end{object}

and therefore

    \begin{object} .... = \end{object}

means put the object here in the column.
