Thanks everyone. I thought David Rhead's suggestions were excellent, and very to the point. \notmath, \ordinary or \unbroken seem sensible new names for \text-in-LaTeX. I may be mistaken, but \slug (or \unbroken) would seem to be very like plain \line, which got written out of LaTeX at an early stage. It is just \hbox to \hsize{...}, and surprisingly useful. I'd like to see \line reinstated in LaTeX.
