One of the ideas behind the article and book styles is that it should be "easy to include an "article" as a chapter of a "report" or "book"." (LaTeX book, p. 23) This could be made much easier if there were a variant of the "book" style called, say, "proceedings" which could deal sensibly with the \author, \title, and \date macros of the article style. One very common use of LaTeX is to make multi-author books of this kind, and it is not as easy as it should be to turn articles into chapters. The \author statement of the article should be turned into a chapter author, printed with the title as a \chapter heading, and copied together with the \title to the toc. I would suggest that the proceedings document type should do this automatically, so that \included articles are appropriately delt with. I doubt if this is new, but here goes anyway.

One of the ideas behind the article and book styles is = that
it should be "easy to include an = "article" as a chapter
of a "report" or "book"." = (LaTeX book, p. 23)

This could be made much easier if there were a variant = of the "book"
style called, say, "proceedings" which = could deal sensibly with the
\author, \title, and \date macros of the article = style.  One very
common use of LaTeX is to make multi-author books of = this kind,
and it is not as easy as it should be to turn = articles into
chapters.  The \author statement of the article = should be
turned into a chapter author, printed with the title = as a \chapter
heading, and copied together with the \title to the = toc.
I would suggest that the proceedings document type = should do
this automatically, so that \included articles are = appropriately
delt with.
