I understand from this that it is not a question of plain -vs. LaTeX -- which is what I suspected from the beginning. Except that for his use we were talking about scaling 1800 vs 1728 and the like which is not the issue at hand (incidentally the emTeX drivers are not restricted to magstep values... I routinely use oddly scaled fonts in bottle label printing) but rather cmcsc10 scaled 1728 (or cmr17) vs. cmcsc18 (or cmr18). Which is a horse of a different color and doesn't really apply as near as I can tell to Phil's application. -Phil's main point is that "for this use at = least, \magsteps are
-mandatory". I understand from this that it is = not a question of plain

Except that for his use we were talking about scaling = 1800 vs
1728 and the like which is not the issue at hand = (incidentally
the emTeX drivers are not restricted to magstep = values... I
routinely use oddly scaled fonts in bottle label = printing) but
rather cmcsc10 scaled 1728 (or cmr17) vs. cmcsc18 (or = cmr18).
Which is a horse of a different color and doesn't = really apply as
near as I can tell to Phil's application.

But it's still not plain vs. LaTeX anyway.
