Let me first state that this is my last message on this subject as a refuse to hear and say the same arguments for the umpteenth time. 1. Don's proposal has one important drawback: unless you rename hyphen.tex you are stuck with US english as \language 0. Reason: in TeX3 patterns are cumulative. So, once you've loaded them they are there. 2. I refuse to stick to US english as \language 0 on the simple reason that I am not american. I admit that in my installation I have 0 for US english and 1 for german, but I see no reason whatsoever to have this fixed since someone does not want to rename hyphen.tex. (And I am willing to do this!) The upcoming new version of LaTeX will no longer load hyphen.tex from inside lplain.tex, and I suggest to all other macro package writers to do the same. 3. The whole problem of multi-language support is not yet properly discussed. I *would* like to participate in a discussion based, e.g., Peter Breitenlohner's article in TUGboat.
