Perhaps my cavil reduces after all to a mere slight dissatisfaction with the name. In plain English `appendix' means a single hunk of text, not a dividing line between non-appendix sections and appendix sections. So for denoting the start of appendix style for sectioning commands, it seems to me something like \beginappendixes (`...appendices' for purists), or maybe \appendixstyle, would make more sense to people learning LaTeX. Or perhaps \begin{appendixes} ... \end{appendixes} along the lines of David Rhead's suggestions for frontmatter/backmatter divisions. A-hah! Come to think of it, maybe LL foresaw the likelihood of interminable argumentation from users about `appendices' versus `appendixes' so he opted for the singular form. And here I am recklessly fomenting argumentation from another angle. My apologies to Mr. Lamport ... Perhaps my cavil reduces after all to a mere slight = dissatisfaction with
the name. In plain English `appendix' means a single = hunk of text, not a
dividing line between non-appendix sections and = appendix sections. So
for denoting the start of appendix style for = sectioning commands, it
seems to me something like \beginappendixes = (`...appendices' for
purists), or maybe \appendixstyle, would make more = sense to people
learning LaTeX.  Or perhaps \begin{appendixes} = ... \end{appendixes}
along the lines of David Rhead's suggestions for = frontmatter/backmatter
divisions.

A-hah! Come to think of it, maybe LL foresaw the = likelihood of
interminable argumentation from users about = `appendices' versus
`appendixes' so he opted for the singular form. And = here I am
recklessly fomenting argumentation from another = angle. My apologies
to Mr. Lamport ...
