For example, the best value of \emergencystretch, IMHO is 1em; of course the v value of an em changes depending on the size, so it would be nice if I could do something like say \addto@hook{\every@sizechange}{\emergencystretch=3D1em} But you can: the hook is already there. It's called \every@size.
