Victor Eijkhout and Johannes Braams pointed out that a solution to my problem has been implemented in the last version of one of the LaTeX styles = developed in the Dutch TeX Users Group (see TUGboat 10, #3). The solution is based on carefully digesting the arguments to \title and \author, and checking for \thanks and \and control sequences. Nevertheless: the fact that my particular problem is solved doesn't mean that the problem-in-general is solved.
