For a certain document style I'm working on, I need to convert title and author name(s) to uppercase. But ... the arguments to \title and \author can contain \thanks, and the (nested) arguments of \thanks must NOT be converted to uppercase. Example: \title{An introduction to displacement ranks and related fast algorithms\thanks{This work was partially supported by the Office of Naval Research, Mathematical Division, VA 22217, ...}} must result in AN INTRODUCTION TO DISPLACEMENT RANKS AND RELATED FAST ALGORITHMS$^*$ a footnote at the bottom of the page --------- * This work was partially supported by the Office of Naval Research, Mathematical Division, VA 22217, ... and 'An introduction to displacement ranks and related fast algorithms' in the table of contents. Imagine that this article is part of an entire journal, or a chapter in a conference proceedings (the example is indeed taken from our Les Houches proceedings series) -- hence the need for a table of contents. I hope it is obvious that I want to accomplish this without asking the author or technical editor to specify the title twice, once in mixed case and once in upper case! 1. Now, either I'm overlooking one or two clever TeX tricks, or there seems to be no solution to this problem, unless you make assumptions about the position of the \thanks command (e.g., always at the end). 2. Is this a matter for our = document-style-designer-interface-think-tank? 3. Solutions are very much appreciated! Although this is not a question-and-answer list for = LaTeX problems -- at
least not in the sense of TeXhax or LaTeX-Help -- I = have something that
I want to discuss here.

For a certain document style I'm working on, I need to = convert title and
author name(s) to uppercase. But ... the arguments to = \title and \author
can contain \thanks, and the (nested) arguments of = \thanks must NOT be
converted to uppercase.

Example:

\title{An introduction to displacement ranks and = related fast
algorithms\thanks{This work was partially supported = by the Office of
Naval Research, Mathematical Division, VA 22217, = ...}}

must result in

AN = INTRODUCTION TO DISPLACEMENT RANKS
          &nbs= p;    AND RELATED FAST ALGORITHMS$^*$

a footnote at the bottom of the page

---------
* This work was partially supported by the Office = of
Naval Research, Mathematical Division, VA = 22217, ...

and 'An introduction to displacement ranks and related = fast algorithms'
in the table of contents. Imagine that this article = is part of an entire
journal, or a chapter in a conference proceedings = (the example is indeed
taken from our Les Houches proceedings series) -- = hence the need for a
table of contents. I hope it is obvious that I want = to accomplish this
without asking the author or technical editor to = specify the title
twice, once in mixed case and once in upper = case!

1. Now, either I'm overlooking one or two clever TeX = tricks, or there
seems to be no solution to this problem, unless you = make assumptions
about the position of the \thanks command (e.g., = always at the end).

2. Is this a matter for our = document-style-designer-interface-think-tank?

3. Solutions are very much appreciated!
