Frank's multicol.sty is a wonderful thing, and makes me very happy, but it has the same very deep flaw that LaTeX in general has - the handling of floats isn't good enough. Either I or some other user here has a complaint almost every day about the naivety of LaTeX's decisions about where to put figures. it works fine for a certain sort of academic book, but it is not up to what a paste-up person would do, or any user of Ventura or Pagemaker after 10 minutes practice.... but I guess this is what Don is after too: > what we'll be dealing with in the output routine department by > year's end (but then, I'm always the optimist, aren't I?). > One other thing I'd like to see: > - A mechanism for starting a new page if there is not enough room > to typeset X amount of new material on it (\pagetotal et al won't you mean that feature of troff has which people keep teasing me about?! sebastian ------_=_NextPart_001_01C19442.D2E8BECC Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Re: Some words from the outside

Don says

 > I've contemplated this very problem on more = than one occasion
 > myself. Making up pages in this fashion = would not be too much
 > more complicated than double column = setting, the only caveat that
the flaw in this argument is that we don't have a = complete mechanism
yet for double column setting! Frank's multicol.sty = is a wonderful
thing, and makes me very happy, but it has the same = very deep flaw
that LaTeX in general has - the handling of floats = isn't good enough.
Either I or some other user here has a complaint = almost every day
about the naivety of LaTeX's decisions about where to = put figures. it
works fine for a certain sort of academic book, but = it is not up to
what a paste-up person would do, or any user of = Ventura or Pagemaker
after 10 minutes practice....

but I guess this is what Don is after too:
 > what we'll be dealing with in the output = routine department by
 > year's end (but then, I'm always the = optimist, aren't I?).

 > One other thing I'd like to see:
 > - A mechanism for starting a new page if = there is not enough room
 > to typeset X amount of new material on it = (\pagetotal et al won't
you mean that feature of troff has which people keep = teasing me
about?!
