However, removing the stretch in before and after-section skip is not enough. If you consider all possible forms of displayed material, section headings are displayed material, you see that the only solution is 1. stretch and shrink components >0 in all vertical glue specifications related to displayed material. 2. a column, whether a full one or a clipped one, i.e. a column on a page with full-width floats, must ALWAYS be n.\baselineskip(\normalsize) high. Well ....... I think that this is the only solution. This week we're trying to finish a 500-page proceedings in two-column layout with lots of wide figures and tables (in some articles 1 per page on average), and I would really appreciate having your solution as soon as possible, Frank. And I agree with Frank that this is a requirement for the new LaTeX, at least as a style option. Nico
