It will take you forever (quite literally) to allow every possible section heading to be covered by \@startsection or whatever it is to be called. I don't care how long you spend trying to "fix" things, there will always be designs that your pre-packaged macros will do. So what? If you're concerned about providing a good interface to the style designer, stop wasting your time with the generic section header command and try and see if you can improve the \@secdef interface. Using \@secdef is not a crime, folks! -dh
