I've replaced a few constructions by token list registers, which seems to be a nice and efficient solution. I wonder why LL prefers complicated \edef constructions over token list registers. The contents of the .aux and other table files are now more or less settled, sotoday I've worked on the parts of latex.tex and the styles that write information *to* the .aux and table files. That part is also nearly finished, but it still needs to be tested. ... I still think we can dismiss section numbering 2.1, 2.1', 2.2 as bad document structure. Equation numbering of this kind has a function, i.e. to indicate original and rewritten forms of formulae or theorems. . Sections are not rewritten in this sense. But if a certain number of votes in favour can be counted, we must certainly implement this feature. Nico
