The work on the ESP journal, book and proceedings styles, especially the last two classes, makes obstacles in LaTeX 2.09 visible, for which I then try -- must try -- to find solutions. Your reply tells me that we're thinking in similar directions! I have only one comment: section numbering 2.2.1, 2.2.1a, 2.2.2 does not strike me as sound, unless 2.2.1 is a subsection and 2.2.1a is the first and only subsubsection of 2.2.1. Frank has obviously met Goedels Ghost. I had told him he would someday. Seriously: I have no solution. If you have an idea, type it in and let me have a look at it.
