(rainer -- i'm not sure we really want to conserve trouble.  more
always comes along.  how about "avoidance of trouble"?  grin.)

i'd like to vote for non-expansion of most macros while writing
to aux files.  certainly things like "\TeX" shouldn't be expanded.
obviously, things like page numbers and the current text of a
section heading should be.  if you can do your tricky programming
to make the correct decisions as to which should and which shouldn't,
i'm sure a lot of folks will be most grateful.
