You're right of course: there are two sides to the problem 1. which information do you want in the TOC, how do you structure it and how do you translate it to a layout on paper? 2. WHERE do you put the information: all in one big file or in a hierarchy of files, just like LaTeX does with the aux files? In relation to 2: the hierarchy of aux files is only 2 layers deep: root + leaves. There is no root + intermediaries + ... + leaves facility. What I've done is simply this: transplant the aux-file hierarchy to toc files (can be extended to lof and lot files). I'll send you a description of what I've done. Nico
