This volume can undoubtedly be of some use to our efforts since the book is intended to be a fairly comprehensive list of possible styles for book production (the author's hope was that publishers would tell the designers and printers to compose the book using phrases like: Use Math style MTe, Table style Tba, etc.). I'll be reading it fairly closely in the next couple of weeks and will post some ideas from this as I feel it necessary. The full information on the volume is: @book{book-design, title="Book Design---Text Format Models", author="Stanley Rice", publisher="R.R. Bowker Company", address="New York", year="1978" } And yes, the author knows about computers (the volume is \copyright~1978 Xerox Corporation).
