I think we have to discuss this first. When I wrote an article for the Texas conference I had to face the problem that the abstract should be typeset in one column (indented on both sides) while the rest of the document was to be typeset in two column. Such a layout is not supported by the current document style commands because things like \begin{abstract} ... \end{abstract} \tableofcontents etc. actually produce output instead of specifying only the content of the abstract. I solved the problem in this special case by redefining the abstract environment to work similar as the \title stuff. As a result \maketitle was supposed to produce the title plus the abstract and of course I had to move the abstract environment before the \maketitle command. All in all not a solution at all. In my opinion the font matter part of the document styles has to be redesigned in all parts. I would be interested in comments. Frank Mittelbach
