I hope they will first finish the LaTeX-project because the book might cause more work than intended! But sure it could be a nice reference book! I had a feeling Frank was hiding in the right direction some time ago when he asked for respons on "what a designer would like to be able to...." May be the work on the book will be helpfull for the design of LaTeX.. I would be happy if the new LaTeX will give easy access to change basic parameters we need to change in design. - After five years of experiences to help authors with designs using different programs I have come to the conclusion that we have a few parameters which are common in all publications; we need just certain flexiblility to be able to change them.(according to papersizes; type of illustrations; flexibility needed in the last layout to achieve maximum of good information design on two matching pages etc). And more; the national differences in typesetting rules have to be taken care of. Apart from this we have lots of small differences in publications which just add the special charm and enhance graphic communication so we better understand the structure of the information . I found that MS Word does cover a variety of basic parameters quite well but Word does not let us follow a lot of typsetting graphic rules (may be less obvios to the unskilled user) which I can apply in TeX. That is why we like TeX! At KTH a group teaching textprocessing finally have published a booklet called "Basic rules" (Staffan Romberger/Kerstin Frenckner, NADA, KTH) which is of much help to the ordinary user (still I found one has to change parameters to make a publication become specialised and welldesigned)!
