Of course... [imagine dozens of paragraphs of straight prose here followed by:] Of course, most people know Einstein's formula as $E=mc^2$. Think about where LaTeX would flag an error if blank lines were permitted in math mode. I think that an adequate and, in the long run, better solution would be to change the message given when a blank line is encountered in math mode to indicate that they are not indicated in that context. -dh
